Mr Sonny Echono 1024x688

The Federal Government of Nigeria says it is alarming the number of university lecturers who were sponsored to study abroad under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) but have absconded. Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, made this known while speaking with newsmen during the TETFund management retreat held in Makurdi, Benue State on Monday 18th December 2023. He said TETFund would compel the absconded lecturers to either refund the money spent on them or be repatriated. “I don’t want to give figures because it is alarming. Sadly, this opportunity being given is being abused,” Echono said. Read Also: Governor Dapo Appoints Oladunjoye as Senior Media Consultant   Speaking further, he said: “The figure is comprehensive. That is why it is a bit large because others have come back home but did not complete the minimum [years] of their bond before deciding to relocate or [join] what is called the Japa syndrome. “We have a database now, which we are refining each time because the institutions are the ones submitting the report. Although it is difficult to get accurate reports, for some, it is not that they absconded; they exceeded their course period. But some have extensions in their programmes. We have a very good idea and the number is not encouraging and I can tell you that even the security agencies are becoming interested and they are looking at that.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC), has said that it has no plan to compromise the expected Supreme Court judgement on the Kano governorship election. In a statement issued on Sunday, 17th December 2023, by the Kano APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, he said the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has been spreading rumours to its members to give them false hope ahead of the Supreme Court judgement. He said rumours had it that NNPP had approached President Bola Tinubu to step in in the matter in favour of the party’s candidate to remain governor and subsequently decamp to APC. Abbas noted: “There is no such meeting held either with Mr President or any leader of the party.” President Bola Tinubu is a Democrat and strongly believes in the rule of law and the right thing to be done therefore will not be part of any arrangement or reconciliation to subvert justice and support people who have stolen votes or breached the electoral act to emerge as leaders.” He pointed out that APC, as a party, was not aware of such an arrangement and would instead intensify all efforts to pursue its case at the Supreme Court to a logical conclusion. The chairman added that the party was confident that it would be victorious at the Supreme Court, especially from the convincing evidence presented at both the Tribunal and the Appeal Court, which ultimately led to the party’s success.

Liverpool Manager, Jurgen Klopp has disclosed that his team did not have enough calmness in front of the goal, following Sunday’s 17th December 2023, 0-0 draw against Manchester United. The result made the Reds miss the opportunity to go back to the top of the Premier League, after Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Brighton earlier in the day. Klopp’s side tried throughout the match, but United defended bravely. “The determination was not there today, they were not calm enough, too much of a rush. “When it is that fierce, to make the right, calm decisions at the moment is another step” “The way we played unsettled them a lot but we did not see that. They just threw themselves at the ball. That means there is always a free player. We did not see that. That is why we drew the game,” Klopp stated at the end of the game.

The House on Wednesday, 13th December 2023, voted to open an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. Republicans in the House stated that the vote was necessary to give them authority to carry out their investigation, should there be legal challenges from the White House. Reacting to the development, Democrats described the move as a political stunt. Members voted along party lines of 221 to 212, all Republicans voted in favor of inquiry, while all Democrats voted against. “Instead of doing anything to help make Americans’ lives better, they are focused on attacking me with lies.” “Instead of doing their job on the urgent work that needs to be done, they are choosing to waste time on this baseless political stunt that even Republicans in Congress admit is not supported by facts,” Mr. Biden was quoted as saying. The vote followed the refusal of the President’s son, Hunter Biden to sit for a private deposition. Recall that Republicans have issued a Subpoena to the younger Mr. Biden, demanding to question him over his business dealings in Ukraine, China and other countries as they seek to portray him as corrupt and link the deeds to his father.
