Ribadu: Mbah has Put an End to Insecurity

Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Advisor (NSA), has praised the Governor Peter Mbah administration’s efforts to put an end insecurity in Enugu State, claiming that the administration has brought the state’s level of insecurity to a complete halt. Governor Peter Mbah praised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its accomplishments in combating corruption. He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to a relentless fight against corruption and insecurity, stating that it is essential to the endeavor of elevating Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion and eradicating poverty. As the Special Guest of Honor at the EFCC Enugu Zonal Command Complex official commissioning on Tuesday, 19 December 2023, Ribadu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to fighting corruption and insecurity nationwide, stating that the administration of President Bola Tinubu had no place for dishonest law enforcement and EFCC officials. “We want to thank you so much for the good work you are doing, not just for Enugu State but for our country,” he remarked, addressing the Governor, Your Excellency, the landscape is evolving. Things are getting better around here and we are getting better. Of the very few who have demonstrated that it is feasible, you are one of the very few.  In Enugu State and therefore throughout the South East, security is returning to normal. And you are leading the charge in it. We acknowledge this and appreciate the excellent work you are doing. Things are becoming better for the economy. It is evident. Insecurity is what you’re addressing. We are certain that with leaders such as yourself, the common issues, and human obstacles we have faced in the past will be history. We wish you and everyone else who is working hard to bring order back to Nigeria, our encouragement.  “The Governor came out boldly and bravely when we interacted with him here in June. He promised to try his hardest to bring the peace back. Because we get daily reports of activity, our records and data show that there are many instances, days, weeks, and even months where we have not documented a single act of violence, incidence of terrorism, or even kidnapping.  In Enugu State, and therefore throughout the South East, they are drastically declining. Everything has evolved. “Unfortunately, attacks on police stations and law enforcement personnel occurred before the election of this administration.” “Individuals who are not even in Nigeria will sit in their comfortable homes in other countries and give commands to others telling them not to go to work or seek out their means of subsistence.” others used to obey these kinds of directives. But that’s over; it’s not happening anymore. We appreciate the Federal Government’s involvement and the leaders who have risen in the South East. “We are grateful to the Governor of Enugu State. He performed a fantastic job. Additionally, urged this state’s citizens to back him. He’s performing admirably. We are pleased with the current state of affairs in Enugu State and, by extension, the South East. In the course of bolstering security, he restated the Tinubu administration’s pledge to provide every Nigerian with a feeling of equality, justice, and fairness in all aspects of life. Governor Mbah also spoke, praising security for the excellent work they had done so far in the state and stating that his administration had helped the EFCC rebuild a suitable Zonal Office in Enugu to bolster the fight against corruption and insecurity. To guarantee that Enugu State and Nigeria as a whole may finally put the memories of insecurity in the past, we today enjoin the security services and EFCC to continue their excellent job. “The establishment of this agency serves as another evidence of our country’s continued commitment to battling corruption. Given the numerous, established harms that corruption causes to economic growth, this commitment is well-founded. In light of this, he said, “It is obvious that corruption has to be reduced to the barest minimum within the State, given the administration’s goal to make Enugu one of the top three states in Nigeria in terms of GDP and achieve a zero percent rate in the poverty headcount.” Read Also: Kano Guber: There is no Plan to Compromise Supreme Court Judgement -APC To restore the country’s reputation, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede urged his colleagues to step up and make use of all the resources and facilities available to them in the fight against corruption. “I want to reassure His Excellency, as well as the people of Enugu State and the South East area, that scammers are not welcome anywhere in the zone with this facility. “Much is expected of him to whom much is given. For the South East to experience the full impact of the EFCC on our development, I demand that every employee have a double commitment to the Commission’s duty,” he said.

Super Eagles Should Prepare Mentally, Says Onyeka

Super Eagles Should Prepare Mentally, Says Onyeka

Frank Onyeka, a midfielder for the Super Eagles, has issued a warning to his colleagues that when the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations begins in Ivory Coast next year, they need to be ready both physically and emotionally to take on the rest of Africa, according to a report.  Ivory Coast will host the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations from January, 13 to February 11, 2024. Nigeria has been paired with the host, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, and Ivory Coast. The last three pulled off a few surprises to get to the quarterfinals in the previous tournament in Cameroon. Even though the Eagles’ supporters were unhappy that they drew their first two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in November, Onyeka thinks that rallying the supporters in front of the competition will give the squad more confidence. He said that the squad knew just how to win the competition in Ivory Coast. The three-time AFCON champion Eagles were eliminated in the round of 16 in Cameroon, and Onyeka anticipates a challenging job for his Abidjan squad. The Brentford Midfielder stated, “I know our fans are frustrated because of our performance, but we still need their support ahead of the AFCON.” “We must take lessons from the draws we had in our past two games. “We need to psychologically and physically prepare ourselves before the AFCON because African sides are difficult to play against. We’re aware of the requirements to win the AFCON. 2 Days Before Court Appearance Suspended Adamawa Commissioner Collapses

On Monday, 18 December 2023, his attorney, Suleiman Usman (SAN), told the court that his client’s health prevented him from appearing and entering a plea. Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the suspended State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has avoided arraignment four times. Yunusa-Ari was reportedly taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi last Friday, 15 December 2023, after collapsing. He was scheduled to appear before the Adamawa State High Court on Monday, 18 December 2023. Usman informed the court that Yunusa-Ari, his client, had now left the Niger Republic and was back in Nigeria, specifically in Bauchi State. He claimed that Yunusa-Ari’s health prevented him from attending the hearing. He stated that they had submitted a medical report that showed his client’s poor condition, which was received from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital. Additionally, he presented a letter from the Attorney-General of the Federation instructing the court to temporarily halt Yunusa-Ari’s prosecution while the Court of Appeal Abuja Division considers an appeal filed by Aishatu Binani, the APC Governorship Candidate. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), the Prosecution’s Attorney, attested to receiving word that the defendant had passed out before going to trial. He emphasized, therefore, that the only option available to him at this time was for the court to issue an arrest warrant. But the court led by Justice Manji angrily declared that it would not accept the AGF’s letter and threatened to shut down the court since the defendant was driving it to its breaking point. Recall that on Monday, the Court rejected Binani’s case and upheld Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s election win.

Southwest Airlines Fined $140million by US DOT Over 2022 Holiday Travel Meltdown

Southwest Airlines Fined $140million by US DOT Over 2022 Holiday Travel Meltdown

Southwest Airlines has been fined $140 million by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) for its operational meltdown during the 2022 holiday travel season on Monday, 18 December 2023. The Department of Transportation Officials revealed that the civil penalty leveled against the airline is 30 times larger than any previous fine against an airline. The Government requires Southwest to start issuing a $75 flight credit to any passenger whose arrival is delayed more than 3 hours when it is the airline’s fault, mechanical issues inclusive. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg disclosed in a statement; “Today’s action sets a new precedent and sends a clear message: if airlines fail their passengers, we will use the full extent of our authority to hold them accountable.” The DOT said $140 million fine adds to the about $600 million in refunds and reimbursements that had previously been agreed to over the meltdown. Officials said they will use the majority of the fine to compensate customers affected by future Southwest flight cancellations and other delays. As a massive winter storm battered the United States during the 2022 holiday season, the airline cancelled more than 16,900 flights, stranding more than 2 million passengers, the DOT further said. Southwest Airlines said; “We are pleased to have reached this consumer-friendly settlement, which includes a new, industry-leading policy to compensate Customers during significant delays and cancellations,” the airline said in a press release.” Transportation officials said their investigation of the days long incident included “examining tens of thousands of pages documents, conducting several multi-day, in-person audits and site visits at Southwest’s headquarters, reviewing thousands of consumer complaints, and consulting with various third parties, such as airports.” That investigation found that the airline had violated consumer protection laws on providing customer service, prompt flight-status notifications, and prompt refunds, DOT officials stated on Monday. Southwest is required to issue you a $75 voucher if your travel is impacted by anything within Southwest’s control and you arrive at your destination three hours or more after your scheduled arrival time. These vouchers are valid for “future use on the airline,” according to the DOT’s announcement. “Taking care of passengers is not just the right thing to do — it’s required, and this penalty should put all airlines on notice to take every step possible to ensure that a meltdown like this never happens again,” Buttigieg said in a statement.

Iceland Volcano Erupts After Weeks of Warnings, and Town Members Evacuated

Iceland Volcano Erupts After Weeks of Warnings, and Town Members Evacuated

A volcano eruption begins in Iceland, on Monday night, 18 December 2023, with lava spewing into the air, and lighting up the sky miles away in the center of the capital, Reykjavik. Not far from Iceland’s famous Blue Lagoon Spa. The said volcano occurred at about 2.5 miles northeast of Grindavik, a town that was evacuated last month, and is not far from the Syartsengi Power Plant. “Eruption does not present a threat to life,” the Icelandic Government said on Tuesday, 19 December 2023, in a statement on its website. Officials also said that flights had not been impacted and that the risk to local infrastructure was being “monitored.” In the initial assessment, volcanologists said that the eruption had occurred in one of the worst possible locations, posing a significant and immediate threat to both the evacuated town and the geothermal power plant. But after volcanologists had a chance to fly over the site of the eruption in the Reykjanes Peninsula, the immediate situation did not appear as dire as initially feared, though the size of the eruption was larger than anticipated and the direction of the lava’s flow still unpredictable. Magnus Gudmundsson, a volcanologist and among the first people to view the eruption from the air said; “This is larger than previous eruptions on Reykjanes.” More so, Armann Hoskuldsson, a volcanologist studying the eruption, disclosed that no lava was flowing toward a power plant in the area and that no other structures were in danger. The eruption could last up to 10 days. The head of the volcanic activity department at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, said: “lava is currently flowing just 2.5 kilometers North of Grindavík, or 1.6 miles, according to Kristín Jonsdottir.” Still, the authorities were cautioning people not to get too close. Hjordis Gudmundsdottir, a spokeswoman for the Department of Civil Protection, urged people to stay away from the area, emphasizing this was “no tourist volcano.” Read Also: Putin Warns of ‘Problems with Finland’ After West Dragged it into NATO Membership According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office; thousands of earthquakes had been detected in Iceland since late October. In November, with homes and roads being damaged, the authorities declared a state of emergency and evacuated Grindavik, a town of more than 3,000 people near the volcano. The authorities have raised aviation alert, because a volcanic eruption could pose a risk to aircraft flying in the North Atlantic if ash spewed into the sky. But as of Monday night, Iceland’s main airport, Keflavik, remained open, with this eruption not producing flight-stopping ash.

Vladimir Putin, Russian President has warned of “forthcoming problems” with neighboring Finland after it joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) earlier this year. Putin disclosed on Sunday, 17 December 2023, that “they (the West) took Finland, and dragged it into NATO. Why? did we have any disputes with Finland?   Former Manchester United Manager Jose Mourinho has stated that, he was accused of bullying a Red Devils United player during his time at Old Trafford. He made this known when speaking on The Obi One podcast. Mourinho joined Man United in 2016 and helped them win the League Cup and European League. He also led the team to finish in second place in the 2017–18 Premier League campaign. However, Mourinho was involved in high-profile bust-ups with the likes of Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw before he was sacked by Man United in December 2018. “When I was at Man United, I changed a player at halftime. I made a change at halftime; his agent accused me of bullying,” Mourinho said on The Obi One podcast. “With [Nemanja] Matic at Stamford Bridge, he was on the bench. I put him at minute 45, and I took him off at minute 70. No, that’s education; that’s coaching. That is doing anything to win. I had to [make a] change. “I laugh about these times but it is different times [now]. Even to be a dad, you have to be a different dad from how your dad was to you. You have to change according to the world, so football is a little bit of a consequence of that.”

Mr Sonny Echono 1024x688

The Federal Government of Nigeria says it is alarming the number of university lecturers who were sponsored to study abroad under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) but have absconded. Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, made this known while speaking with newsmen during the TETFund management retreat held in Makurdi, Benue State on Monday 18th December 2023. He said TETFund would compel the absconded lecturers to either refund the money spent on them or be repatriated. “I don’t want to give figures because it is alarming. Sadly, this opportunity being given is being abused,” Echono said. Read Also: Governor Dapo Appoints Oladunjoye as Senior Media Consultant   Speaking further, he said: “The figure is comprehensive. That is why it is a bit large because others have come back home but did not complete the minimum [years] of their bond before deciding to relocate or [join] what is called the Japa syndrome. “We have a database now, which we are refining each time because the institutions are the ones submitting the report. Although it is difficult to get accurate reports, for some, it is not that they absconded; they exceeded their course period. But some have extensions in their programmes. We have a very good idea and the number is not encouraging and I can tell you that even the security agencies are becoming interested and they are looking at that.”
