JUST IN: A 6-Story Building Partly Collapses in New York

…no immediate reports of injuries were made after part of the 46-unit building came apart on Monday afternoon, City authorities said. A part of a 6-story building in the Morris Heights neighbourhood of the Bronx, New York, USA collapsed on Monday afternoon, December 11, 2023.  There were no immediate reports of injuries, the Fire Department reported. Photographs and videos from the scene show rooms at the corner of the 46-unit building exposed like the walls had been pulled off. Lives disrupted by the partial collapse were evident from the rubble of the collapse. On the street below, walls and bricks lay in shambles just below the apartments, left exposed to the cold afternoon air. Firefighters stated that scaffolding had surrounded portions of the 6-story building structure prior to its collapse.

Legislators Promise N350 Million to Restore Kaduna Community

The Legislators’ Northern Caucus has promised the citizens of Kaduna State N350 million on Monday, 11th December 2023, to help restore Tudun Biri, a hamlet in Kaduna State that was unintentionally bombed by the Nigerian Army last week. A bomb that was meant to drive out criminals from Tudun Biri, in Kaduna State‘s Igabi Local Government Area, went off target, killing an estimated 120 innocent persons and injured numerous others. Alhassan Doguwa, the leader of the Northern House Caucus, declared on Monday, 11th December 2023, that he planned to travel to the region to offer condolences to the families and survivors. The legislators expressed their condemnation of the tragedy and their willingness to support the government in restoring normalcy to the area in a statement that the Kano congressman personally signed. “The Northern caucus has announced a monetary donation of Mr. Speaker and that of the Northern regional caucus of the Federal House of Representatives amounting to the sum of N45 million cash,” the statement said in part. Read Also: Kaduna: Bandits Killed Two, Nine Rescued NTA Looses Veteran Newscaster “The Northern caucus is to provide for various developmental projects ranging from the provision of health care facilities, blocks of classrooms, water boreholes, and a community town hall worth N350 million to support the Federal Government’s efforts in rebuilding the community.” Even as they bemoaned the ongoing violent campaigns by bandits and other criminal elements throughout the nation, the legislators praised “The charitable commitment of the Nigerian military and other security agencies for their patriotic commitments to combat the upsurge of insurgency, banditry and other criminal activities that plagued some parts of the country.” “Against the backdrop of such unshakable recurrent mishaps, the caucus has resolved to pay a condolence visit to commiserate with the government, and the leaders of the Tudun Biri community on Monday, 11th December 2023 to commiserate with survivors of the unfortunate incident,” the lawmakers said. “The purpose of the visit is to obtain firsthand accounts of the events that occurred and to enable the collection of valuable data to prevent such incidents in the future. “The caucus applauds the Tinubu-led Federal Government for addressing victims’ welfare and reaching out to them promptly.” The legislators have agreed to follow up with the Federal Government to make sure the victims and the community receive the proper compensation that the federal government promised. The legislators are prepared to offer the compensation’s legal foundation and to make sure that the compensation plan fairly represents the family of the deceased. The statement went on, “The caucus thanks the Government and governor of Kaduna State for keeping to their responsibility of protecting law and order in the state and appeals to the affected community and the leaders to remain calm and law-abiding.”

Amotekun Arrests 62 Suspected Criminals in Ondo

On Monday, 11th December 2023, the Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as the Amotekun, paraded no less than sixty-two individuals who are purportedly involved in a range of criminal operations around the state. The suspects were detained in several locations throughout the state’s eighteen local government districts, according to the state security corps. The State Commander of the Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, paraded the suspects at the agency’s headquarters in Akure, the State Capital, and explained that the arrests were a part of the corps’ efforts to make sure the holiday season was free of crime. He claimed that with the help of other sister security agencies, Amotekun was able to make the arrests. All told, we were successful in apprehending roughly fifteen kidnappers. A few of them were armed.” “However, the sharp-eyed agents managed to apprehend a few of them, particularly in Akure North Local Government’s Ala/Dada/Ago Oyinbo axis. Additionally, there are some alleged kidnappers terrorising the Elegbeka axis in the state’s Ose LGA. Among them are armed robbers who were actually apprehended in the city of Akure as well as individuals who specialise in shoplifting.” The commander mentioned that one Usman Garuba, who was detained on charges of kidnapping and arson, was among the suspects. It was claimed that the suspect, an ex-convict, had set fire to a community. “Garuba was apprehended in the vicinity of the Ala/Dada/Ago-Oyinbo axis. He has successfully abducted more than nine victims and demanded a ransom. He once led five other people back to a village at night and set a community on fire because the villagers had tried to resist him. Thus, he is in our care and was previously incarcerated,” Adeleye said.

NTA Looses Veteran Newscaster

The Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) lost one of its veteran newscasters, Aisha Bello Mustapha. The news of her passing broke out in the early hours of Monday, 11 December 2023. The journalist passed away in Abuja following a brief illness.  In the 1990s and 2000s, Aisha was a well-liked face on NTA network. Zainab Sabo, a family friend, who verified the death said that she will be buried later in the day in accordance with Islamic customs. In Tim’s career, before venturing into politics, he had a teaching career. Tim was a high school teacher and a coach. He served as a geography teacher and coach at Mankato west High school. He started teaching from 1989-1990 in a high school, in China, as part of the first government groups of American educators. These were those who taught in China, through a program at the Harvard University. He taught social studies and coached various sports at Mankato West High School.     Tim Walz was a National Guard veteran. In his military service, Walz served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1989 to 2005. He was deployed to Kosovo and also served in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Also, he is regarded as the highest-ranking enlisted soldier ever to serve in the congress. Walz has been recognized for his work in Congress with awards from different organisations like, the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, the American Cancer Society, the National Association of Development Organizations, the National Farmers Union and the Matthew Shepard Foundation.   Tim Walz began his political career in 2006 when he was elected as the U.S. Representative for Minnesota’s 1st congressional district. He served in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2019. He is a ranking member of the Agricultural subcommittees on General farm commodities and risk Management. I didn’t need a soothsayer to tell me Aminah had cried all night. Was it her swollen eyes that didn’t pass the message to me or her gloomy face? He had travelled and wasn’t at home; he pleaded with me to try as much as possible to be at their place the following morning; someone called her barren again. He said bitterly. Aminah was a waiting mother for 11 years; she had been strong and carried on with her life, hoping Allah would answer her prayers on time.  Until some folks started calling her barren, Aminah was an online chef who shared recipes that she thought would be useful for her followers, but anytime any of the recipes didn’t sit well with them, they would go to her DM to call her all sorts of names. Some even went as far as telling her to divert all her energy into how she would have children, forgetting she was not Allah. That morning, I didn’t bother to ask her why she was crying; all I did was to pacify her. I made sure she ate and slept before going to my home. Over N400bn was Disbursed to Tertiary Institutions in 2023 -Says Echono

  The Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, Sonny Echono, has disclosed that the board has disbursed over N400 billion to Tertiary Institutions across the country in 2023. Echono stated this on Monday, 18 December 2023 in Makurdi while speaking to journalists during TETFund’s Management Retreat. He added that the amount represented the backlog of previous years that were not accessed and disbursement for the ongoing year. He said: “I am also pleased to report that today they have accessed more than that. The reason is that we have a backlog of allocations from previous years that some institutions have not accessed but because we streamlined the process and created an avenue to assist the institutions in accessing their backlog, that number has grown.” “So, now we are in the neighborhood of about N400 billion that we have disbursed to our institutions this year, far more than the budget because most of the outstanding allocations are now being accessed. We are also removing little bottlenecks that are hampering the completion of these projects.” The Executive Secretary further added that TETFund can not be extended to private institutions for now due to the extant law of the country. He said: “The only way we collaborate with private institutions currently is in the area of research because we know that research is universal and we know that knowledge is collaboration.” “So, we are encouraging them to participate and we sponsor people or private individuals who have ideas. Going forward, we are under authority; if the law is amended and extended, we will have no exceptions.”
