Why You Should Pray

Prayer is the key.

Prayer is the key.

Prayer is the master key.

Jesus started with prayer,

and ended with prayer.

Prayer is the master key.

Growing up, at home, in school, in church, everywhere I went, I always heard this song. It was like a childhood anthem. It proved to be an effective tactic in strengthening our religious tenets as kids. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, prayer is an address (such as a petition) to God or a god in word or thought. It also defined prayer as an earnest request or wish. However, it is important to note that prayer is more than just a religious practice. It’s more like a human and cultural thing. Strong emphasis on prayer have been found in religions like, Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam — different forms of religion emphasizes different kinds of prayer and meditation. Even those who identify as having no religion also pray. We all make wishes.

In every circumstance, whether in sickness or in health, whether we are happy or sad, whether the future is certain or bleak, whether we are strong or weak, We have to hope earnestly that things will work out. We have to fight the odds. We have to pray. There are a lot of reasons why you should pray. However, I’ll give you three:

  1. To fight temptations: The world we live in is full of traps and temptations of various kinds. Thoughts and ideas that are not of God and are not morally upright crop into our hearts from time to time. These are some of the reasons why we have to pray. As the Christian Holy Bible directs us, we need to pray without ceasing. We have to pray earnestly for grace and strength from God in order to fight these temptations. Some coping mechanisms for when you feel overwhelmed can be found here. Most importantly, pray.
  2. To walk closer with and to receive guidance from God: The word of God commands us to walk before him and be blameless. There are a lot of distractions in our world. As humans, we often have to make decisions without any knowledge of what the end result could be. We find ourselves at a crossroads and constantly in doubt about what could become of us on whatever path we set out on. This is another reason why we should pray. Prayer moves the hands of God. It’s the medium by which we can convey our troubles to God as well as understand His purpose for us.
  3. To receive miracles: A miracle is any event, occurrence, or phenomenon that breaks the natural or known laws of order. As humans, we are constantly in pursuit of the extraordinary and the supernatural. With prayer, we can earnestly plead for God’s intervention and manifestation in different phases of our lives. When things seem bleak or beyond our control, when all else fails, we use prayers to ask for a positive turnaround in our case.

However, when we make our supplications to God, we have to believe. We have to believe with every inch of our being that our request will be granted. As the Bible says in the book of James, “if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all men generously and without reproaching, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. (James 1:5–6 RSV). We should also be willing to align our thoughts with God’s and remove carnality and sin from our spirits. And then, our wishes will be generously granted by God.

In conclusion, dear reader, pray!
